Delft: visit the leaning tower...

Delft, 15 degrees, showers

(don't be fooled by the sun: this picture has been taken in June)

Pisa has its leaning tower, Delft has its leaning church, and I am living at the good side of it (the side toward which it is NOT leaning). In fact, the church has been leaning right after the workers started to build it (and not just a bit: it deviates 2m from the vertical). Why? Because the church has been erected on a piece of land that was "borrowed" from the nearby canal and that the ground started to sink... (try to find a dry spot in Holland!). Realizing what was happening, the workers wisely decided to stop the construction. Their final touches were the little towers on the top, which, contrary to the rest, are correctly perpendicular to the ground. One must admit: this gives a funny look to the ensemble... and a very good reason to come and see by yourself (free-for-friends accomodation, view on the church certified :))

For those who wonder: the left ones are Cyril's and the right ones are mine :) (the picture was taken in July 2006 inside the church, on what is supposed to be the grave of the famous painter Vermeer)
